Irish Owners Shine on Flat Racing's Greatest Stage- ROYAL ASCOT 2026 REVIEW

There is no finer way to begin Royal Ascot week than beneath the magnificent backdrop of Kensington Palace Gardens at the Goffs London Sale. Bringing together many of the world's leading owners, trainers, breeders and bloodstock professionals, the sale has become the perfect curtain-raiser to one of the most prestigious weeks in the international racing calendar, setting the tone for five unforgettable days of world-class competition.

Although there was no Irish challenger in the opening Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, Ed Walker's Ten Bob Tony gave jockey Kieran Shoemark the perfect start to the meeting with an impressive victory.

The Irish challenge was soon underway, however, as Aidan O'Brien struck with a superb opening-day double. Great Barrier Reef landed the Group 2 Coventry Stakes before Mission Central captured the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes, both under Ryan Moore, for the powerhouse ownership partnership of Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg and Peter Brant.

The feature race on day one, the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, saw a mouth-watering clash between the Irish and English Guineas winners. In a thrilling finish, Bow Echo, partnered by Billy Loughnane, narrowly denied G'staad in the closing stages.

There was further Irish success in the Ascot Stakes Handicap where Joseph O'Brien saddled the first two home, with Kizlyar prevailing for the HOS Syndicate, completing a memorable opening day for the Irish contingent.

Day two belonged once again to the Irish. Victorious, carrying the colours of Mrs John Magnier, produced an impressive performance to land the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore.
Joseph O'Brien continued his outstanding week when Limestone stormed home to capture the Group 2 Queen's Vase for the ownership partnership of Valmont, Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud, with Dylan Browne McMonagle producing a perfectly judged ride. O'Brien completed a memorable double on the day when King of Cloughan took the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes for owner Michael H. Burke.

Irish success continued on day three when Fozzy Stack's Nola Soul gave veteran jockey Seamie Heffernan another Royal Ascot success in the opening Listed race for owner Craig Bernick.

Joseph O'Brien was back in the winner's enclosure later on the card as Enceladus, partnered by Ryan Moore, produced another polished performance to score in the colours of Flaxman Stables Ireland Ltd.

The highlight of the afternoon came in the Gold Cup where Scandinavia, trained by Aidan O'Brien, showed tremendous courage to prevail in a stirring finish for owners Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs John Magnier, adding yet another Royal Ascot Group 1 to Ballydoyle's remarkable record.

Day four produced another trio of Irish victories. Aidan O'Brien once again captured the feature race as Precise justified favouritism in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes under Ryan Moore for Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor, Mrs John Magnier and Westerberg.  The Ballydoyle team struck again when Causeway captured the King Edward VII Stakes, while Green Carrera, fresh from victory at the Irish Guineas Festival, continued her rich vein of form by landing the Sandringham Stakes for her new ownership team of Rancho Temescal, Farfellow Farm and Chivalry, providing Joseph O'Brien with yet another Royal Ascot winner. Mickael Barzalona was in the saddle.

The final day saw Fozzy Stack and Seamie Heffernan combine once again as Thesecretadversary produced a determined display to win for owners Cayton Park Stud and Mrs John Magnier.

There was a fitting finale for Irish racing as Aidan O'Brien recorded his seventh winner of the week when Illinois captured the closing race of the meeting. That victory carried even greater significance as it brought O'Brien's Royal Ascot tally beyond the remarkable milestone of 100 winners - an extraordinary achievement that further cements his place among the greatest trainers in the history of the sport and a record that may never be surpassed.

Royal Ascot once again showcased the strength of Irish racing on the international stage. Irish-trained horses, jockeys and, importantly, Irish owners were to the fore throughout the week, enjoying success at every level from Listed races to the meeting's most prestigious Group 1 contests.
